Knowing When to Kill Your App

ou’ve spent time and money developing your app, testing your app and promoting your app with the hopes that the market accepts it as a viable product to sustain a business but are continuing to come up against challenges which are causing you to spin your wheels and have second thoughts about getting into this space in the first place. The amount of time and effort that is being spent on this product is beginning to work against you but you are unwilling to give up the fight to succeed.

This scenario is common place for a lot of app publishers and often time never ends. But knowing when to stop the cycle and kill your app is an important part of the application lifecycle which will free you up not only from spending time and money which is not bringing in return but more importantly to allow you to focus on other ideas and projects which very well may be the winning ticket.

With any product comes a lifecycle – a beginning a middle and an end. Specifically for apps there are 4 common parts to the lifecycle:

  1. Pre-Launch: including concept, design, development, testing and marketing efforts that lead up to launch
  2. Launch: the introduction of your app to market
  3. Post-Launch or Maintenance: updates, continual marketing, support, revenue generation
  4. Decommission: decision to take down or no longer support the application

Decommissioning a product is not an easy decision and of course should not be made lightly. It is extremely important that you, as the business owner or app publisher, feel that you have done everything you could to set your app up for success. Often this means making small but significant investments in marketing and promotion to test the impact of increasing app discovery. It also often involves testing and tweaking your product features, quality and marketing strategy to see what is working and what is not. However, when you have reached the point when your efforts are not bringing in any return you need to start looking for the these tell-tale signs to start to consider moving on to the next big thing.

These are 3 key signs that after exhausting efforts, it may be time to move on to new opportunities.

1. Little, no or bad ratings and reviews

If your app has received less than 5 reviews, no reviews or an extremely low star rating in the app store this will have an impact on getting downloads. Today’s consumer is a social shopper and will look to download apps that have significant amount of reviews first and foremost. The more reviews you have the better. The second thing they will look at is the star rating attached the app. You want to make sure your app stays at a 3 star or better.

2. Revenue versus Cost to Support

If the amount of money you are making from your app continues to be insufficient for the support and marketing of the application whether this be through bug fixes, necessary platform upgrades or in the continual marketing any app requires to be successful, this is a definite warning sign that something is not working. An app is a business and a business needs to be at the very least profit neutral (if you have another job to support yourself that is) in order to continue.

3. Revenue versus Time to Support

Don’t forget to factor in your time. If your app is taking you away from revenue opportunities from your full-time gig or if this is your full-time gig then you need to ensure you are factoring in the time to manage and support your app. If the revenue your app has been generating is not covering all the operational costs including your time then you should take the time to re-evaulate your next steps.

From our own experience working with apps across platform and categories, the secret to a successful business is a great product, passion and persistence. We encourage you to do whatever it takes to find success with your product. We also encourage you to be realistic and pragmatic when it comes to the business of your app which is why we also feel the secret to success in the app business is knowing when to walk away.

Descubren cómo las variaciones de temperatura influyen en el reloj biológico

Ueli Schibler, profesor en la Universidad de Ginebra (UNIGE), en Suiza, ha presentado un mecanismo molecular, por el que los ritmos de la temperatura corporal influyen en la expresión genética del 'reloj biológico'. Este estudio, publicado en 'Science', y realizado en colaboración con un equipo de la Escuela Politécnica Federal de Lausana (EPFL), también señala que la producción de DBP, una proteína implicada en la desintoxicación y el metabolismo de los fármacos, es modulada por las variaciones diarias de temperatura.    Muchas de nuestras funciones fisiológicas, como la frecuencia del latido cardiaco, la secreción de hormonas, o la temperatura del cuerpo, están reguladas por relojes internos. La mayoría de las células de nuestro cuerpo poseen uno de ellos -formados por un grupo de 'genes reloj' que muestran una actividad cíclica cada veinticuatro horas. Estos osciladores locales son sincronizados por un reloj central, localizado en el cerebro, que se adapta al tiempo geofísico por los ciclos de luz-oscuridad.

   El reloj central controla también señales de coordinación que se envían a los osciladores auxiliares. "Las variaciones en la temperatura corporal constituye una de estas señales diarias, pero desconocíamos su funcionamiento", explica Ueli Schibler. Para abordar esta cuestión, el equipo investigador ha desarrollado un sistema que permite exponer células a ciclos de temperatura simulados.

   "Hemos descubierto que los ciclos de temperatura modulan la expresión rítmica de una proteína llamada CIRP, y que esta molécula es necesaria para la activación de los genes del reloj central, sobre una base diaria", señala Jörg Morf, investigador en el  Centro Nacional de Capacidad en Investigación (NCCR) Fronteras en Genética, y primer autor del artículo. En contraste con la mayoría de las proteínas reguladoras que controlan la expresión de genes mediante la unión directa, CIRP actúa mediante la adhesión al ARN.

LOS RELOJES PUEDEN INFLUIR EN LA EFICACIA Y TOXICIDAD DE LAS DROGAS

   En colaboración con el grupo de Félix Naef, de la EPFL, los investigadores han identificado prácticamente todas las dianas de ARN del CIRP, en las células vivas, utilizando una técnica ultra sofisticada de ingeniería genética. Este logro permitió sondear el transcriptoma -el ARN de todos los genes transcritos en un momento dado. "CIRP une transcripciones que codifican diferentes proteínas circadianas en la célula, lo que aumenta su estabilidad y permite que se acumulen", explica Ueli Schibler. La sensibilidad de los experimentos ha permitido al equipo localizar y contar cada molécula de ARN de un gen específico llamado CLOCK.

   Según el estudio, las variaciones de temperatura inducen una producción rítmica de CIRP, que a su vez refuerza la activación cíclica de los genes osciladores circadianos. En los seres humanos, la diferencia de 1 grado Celsius en la temperatura corporal, observada entre la mañana y la noche, toma un nuevo significado. Los investigadores afirman haber demostrado que una pequeña fluctuación es suficiente para sincronizar los osciladores celulares.

   Además, uno de los engranajes bioquímicos controlados por CIRP induce la acumulación cíclica de DBP, una proteína implicada en la detoxificación y metabolismo de los fármacos, lo cual demuestra que muchos relojes internos pueden influir en la eficacia y toxicidad de las drogas.

Crean un dispositivo para reaprovechar la sangre derramada en los quirófanos

Científicos de la Universidad Strathclyde de Glasgow en Escocia (Reino Unido) han desarrollado un dispositivo para ir recogiendo la sangre que se va derramando -y, por ende, perdiendo- durante las intervenciones quirúrgicas y poderla aprovechar en la misma intervención. Generalmente en las grandes operaciones se suelen perder grandes cantidades de sangre, lo que hace necesario recurrir a transfusiones que, en algunos casos, pueden acabar causando reacciones adversas en los pacientes. Además, esto también conlleva un coste ya que, como reconoce a la BBC el autor de este dispositivo, Terry Gourlay, "la sangre no es barata".

Este nuevo dispositivo, llamado 'Hemosep', funciona de una forma sencilla y requiere poco trabajo. Por un lado incluye una pequeña máquina que agita la sangre para que no se coagule, aunque la pieza fundamental es una bolsa de plástico en la que se va depositando la sangre recuperada.

Esta bolsa funciona como una esponja química que absorbe todo el plasma no deseado gracias a una membrana de policarbonato, que deja pasar el plasma pero mantiene separados los componentes más importantes de la sangre, incluyendo importantes proteínas y factores de coagulación.

Según ha insistido el profesor Gourlay en declaraciones recogidas por Europa Press, el beneficio es claro ya que "es tu sangre".

Por el momento, 'Hemosep' ya ha sido probado con éxito en Turquía, donde ha sido utilizado en más de 100 cirugías abiertas, y en Canadá, y el próximo paso es ponerlo a la venta en la Unión Europea, como parte de una sociedad entre la Universidad de Strathclyde y la compañía de instrumentos médicos Advancis.
